After Patching Axios 1.16.0: Validation Steps for CVE-2026-44494
The patch is a starting point
CVE-2026-44494 is fixed upstream in Axios 1.16.0. The affected range starts at 1.0.0 and continues through 1.15.x. Red Hat rates the flaw Important with CVSS 3.1 score 8.7, and OpenShift Container Platform is among the affected Red Hat products. A successful response therefore involves more than changing one line in a manifest.
The vulnerable behavior is an inherited config.proxy value. If an attacker can modify Object.prototype, Axios can route an apparently normal request through an attacker-controlled proxy. The result can expose authentication data and allow response modification.
Confirm the artifact
After updating the dependency, rebuild the image and inspect the package inventory inside the final artifact. A source lockfile is useful evidence, but the runtime image is the decisive artifact. Confirm that Axios 1.16.0 or later is present and that an older copy is not still being copied from a cached dependency directory or unused layer.
Record the new image digest and the deployment revision. Deploying a mutable tag does not prove which build is running. A digest makes it possible to compare the scanner result, the running container, and the remediation record.
Apply the platform errata
Apply the Red Hat errata that include CVE-2026-44494 for the installed OpenShift Container Platform release. Check other affected Red Hat products that may use Axios in their management interfaces or supporting images. The platform update and application image update address different package sets, so completing one does not close the other.
Red Hat reports no supported mitigation for the flaw. A temporary proxy override or input filter may reduce a specific path, but the record should remain open until the supported fix is deployed and verified.
Test the pollution boundary
In a non-production environment, send nested objects containing __proto__, constructor, and prototype keys to the application endpoints that accept complex configuration. Confirm that the application rejects or neutralizes the keys and that a shared object prototype is unchanged.
Then verify that an Axios request without an own proxy property does not inherit a proxy from a simulated polluted prototype. This test should exercise the real HTTP adapter, not only a mocked client. Use an isolated local proxy and non-sensitive test credentials. Record the result with the Axios version and image digest.
Monitor after rollout
Review outbound network logs for connections to unexpected proxy hosts or ports. Look for requests whose destination differs from the application configuration, especially around authentication and service-to-service calls. Alerting should not log bearer tokens or request bodies; hashes or allowlisted destination labels are safer.
Check that the application's error handling still returns expected responses through approved proxies. A patch can change how inherited properties are handled, so normal integration tests should cover proxy-authenticated paths, retries, and long-lived clients.
Exposure context
The ZoomEye Search title="OpenShift" returned 5,443 matches on 2026-11-03 UTC. The CVE filter returned 0. The Search result is broad product visibility, not a validation of the Axios patch or the application's exploitability. Use the internal image and deployment record for closure.
