arXiv:2611.06227v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems can efficiently reuse 5G New Radio (NR) reference signals to enable joint communication and passive target detection. Among these, the Positioning Reference Signal (PRS) is widely adopted for high-performance sensing activities. However, the PRS configuration, given by the comb structure, introduces periodic ambiguities, resulting in ghost targets. Existing approaches mitigate this issue by combining PRS with additional reference signals, such as the DeModulation Reference Signal (DMRS), effectively removing ghosts but at the cost of higher complexity and sensing overhead. This paper proposes a low-complexity successive estimation strategy that initially allows ghost targets but progressively eliminates them using historical ambiguity-free estimations. The method comprises a matching process to associate current detections with historical real targets, and a pattern deviation detection mechanism to trigger a fallback to ambiguity-free estimation when the target set changes. We derive a sufficient condition that guarantees the correct matching as a function of target velocity, PRS comb size, subcarrier spacing, and sensing refresh rate. Using this condition, a parameter selection strategy is proposed to jointly improve sensing and communication performance. Numerical results demonstrate that our method achieves unambiguous detection while significantly reducing sensing resources, thus releasing more resources for communication compared to State-of-the-Art (SotA) approaches.
