Tinder, Replika, and Character.AI are already rated 18+ on the US App Store — Apple's new rule changes nothing for them. The bite lands on the apps where romance is one feature among many, and on family location-sharing apps in Brazil, starting November 16.
Apple told developers on November 2 that App Store Connect will add two new age-rating content descriptors on November 16, 2026. Developers must declare, on their next app update or rating-questionnaire change, whether their app includes:
- Dating and Relationships: features that enable dating or relationship connections between real people and/or a virtual companion that engages a user in sexual or romantic content.
- Shared Location: sharing a user's real-world location with another person or group.
Any app that ticks Dating and Relationships gets a minimum age rating of 18+, everywhere. Shared Location, Apple says, may not change the minimum rating in some regions. Every app on the store must have both declarations completed by January 12, 2027.
I checked the calendar arithmetic, because the deadlines are the story for developers:
Announcement (Nov 2) -> descriptors live (Nov 16): 14 days Descriptors live (Nov 16) -> all apps declared (Jan 12, 2027): 57 days Announcement -> final deadline: 71 days Fourteen days from announcement to live, and 57 days from live to full compliance. That is not a long runway for an app that has to re-rate, rework its onboarding, or decide whether a secondary feature is worth an 18+ floor.
Here is why the headline names are the wrong place to look. Multiple outlets checked the US store on November 3 and found Tinder, Bumble, Replika, and Character.AI already at 18+. For those apps, this policy formalizes what their ratings already say. The apps that actually move are the ones rated 12+ or 17+ today where a companion mode, a matchmaking feature, or romantic roleplay sits inside a larger product. Apple's wording is deliberately broad: it is not "a dating app," it is any feature that enables a relationship connection with a real person or a virtual companion. A general chatbot with a romantic roleplay mode is in scope. A social app with a matchmaking tab is in scope.
The second descriptor is the quieter one, and it bites in exactly one named country. In Brazil, local rules require an A16 rating for Shared Location and an A18 rating for Dating and Relationships. Apple offers one escape hatch there: a developer that believes its app deserves a lower Brazilian rating — its example is location sharing designed for parents and children — can request an official rating directly from Brazil's Ministry of Justice and Public Security, and that rating will display on the Brazilian store. Everywhere else, a family tracker that declares Shared Location may see no rating change at all, which means the same app can be 4+ in the US and A16 in Brazil for the same feature.
That split is the developer takeaway. This is not a ban, and it is not Apple policing content one app at a time. It is a questionnaire change that turns a feature flag into a rating floor, automatically, on the next submission. If you ship an AI companion, audit every mode your app offers — not just the one on your marketing page — before November 16, because the question Apple will ask is not "what is your app for," it is "does any feature do this." And if your answer is yes, your addressable audience on iOS just lost everyone under 18, whether or not they were ever your target user.
