Some forms look easy and turn out to be annoying. A form that asks for a birth date, a birth time and a birth place is one of them. It has just four or five fields, yet there are a lot of ways to get it wrong.
I’ve been looking at forms like this, so here are the problems I think are worth thinking about. No code, only the design side.
- People often don’t know the exact time
This is the big one. Many people only know their birth time roughly, or not at all. If the form insists on an exact time, they’ll either guess or leave. A better form lets people say “I’m not sure,” and explains what that changes. Forcing a made-up answer just gives you bad data that looks real.
- Date formats confuse people
Different regions write dates in a different order, so “03/04/1990” can mean two different days. A form that shows a clear label, like day, month, year in separate boxes, avoids a lot of mistakes. Showing the date back to the user in words before submitting (for example, “3 April 1990”) is cheap and catches errors.
- The same time can mean different things in different places
Birth time only makes sense with the place and its time zone at that moment. Places also change their time rules over the years. If the form only stores a time without handling the place properly, the result can be off. I’d treat this as a design question as well as a technical one: show the user what you understood, and let them correct it.
- Place search needs to be forgiving
People type place names in different spellings, and many towns share a name. Suggestions as you type help, and so does showing a bit of extra detail, like the region, so people can pick the right one.
- This is personal data
Birth details are personal. Say clearly why you ask for them and how you use them, and don’t ask for more than the tool needs.
An example
The free kundli tool on AI AstroCall is one form like this. It asks for a name, birth date, birth time and birth place and generates a birth chart (a kundli) from them. I’m mentioning it as an example of the kind of form I mean, not as a model to copy.
