GitHub Achievements: The Complete Guide to Every Badge, Tier & Progress Tracking
GitHub is more than commits, pull requests, and repositories. Your profile can also showcase achievements that recognize your contributions to the open-source community.
But how do you unlock every achievement? Which ones have multiple tiers? And how can you track your progress without constantly checking your profile?
I built GitHub Achievements Guide to make finding these answers easier.
In this guide, we'll explore GitHub achievements, their requirements, progression tiers, and a simple CLI for tracking your progress.
✨ 1. Understanding GitHub Achievements
GitHub Achievements are profile badges that recognize specific activities and contributions.
They highlight different ways developers participate in the GitHub ecosystem, from contributing to open source to collaborating with other developers.
Here are the seven achievements covered in this guide:
| Achievement | What it recognizes |
|---|---|
| 🦈 Pull Shark | Merged pull requests |
| ⭐ Starstruck | Building popular repositories |
| 🤝 Pair Extraordinaire | Co-authored pull requests |
| 🧠 Galaxy Brain | Accepted Discussion answers |
| ⚡ Quickdraw | Quickly closing an issue or PR |
| 🚀 YOLO | Merging without review |
| 💖 Public Sponsor | Public sponsorship |
🏆 2. GitHub Achievement Tiers
Some achievements have multiple progression levels.
Understanding these thresholds helps you see what is required to reach the next level.
| Achievement | Default | Bronze | Silver | Gold |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pull Shark | 2 | 16 | 128 | 1,024 |
| Starstruck | 16 | 128 | 512 | 4,096 |
| Pair Extraordinaire | 1 | 10 | 24 | 48 |
| Galaxy Brain | 2 | 8 | 16 | 32 |
Note: These are the thresholds documented by this project. Verify them against current GitHub behavior before relying on them.
Quickdraw, YOLO, and Public Sponsor do not follow these four-tier progressions.
🔍 3. How to Unlock Each Achievement
Let's look at practical ways to earn these achievements through genuine contributions.
🦈 Pull Shark
Get your pull requests merged into repositories.
Good opportunities include:
- Fixing bugs.
- Improving documentation.
- Adding tests.
- Developing useful features.
- Contributing translations.
⭐ Starstruck
Create something developers genuinely want to use.
Focus on solving real problems, maintaining your repository, writing excellent documentation, and building a community.
🤝 Pair Extraordinaire
Collaborate with another developer using Git's Co-authored-by commit trailer.
Your co-authored commits can count when the associated pull request is merged.
🧠 Galaxy Brain
Help developers through GitHub Discussions.
Share technical knowledge, provide working solutions, and answer questions clearly.
⚡ Quickdraw
Close an issue or pull request within five minutes of opening it.
🚀 YOLO
Merge a pull request without review. Only do this when appropriate and when you have permission.
💖 Public Sponsor
Publicly sponsor an open-source developer through GitHub Sponsors.
Developer tip: Focus on meaningful contributions instead of trying to manipulate achievement counts. Quality open-source work matters more than badges.
🛠️ 4. Track Your Achievements with a CLI
Checking your achievements manually can become repetitive.
I wanted a simpler developer workflow: enter a GitHub username, inspect available achievement progress, and understand how far an account is from the next tier.
That's why I created:
GitHub Achievements Guide
A developer-focused reference and command-line tool for understanding GitHub achievements and tracking supported progress.
Project: https://github.com/6t9xstar/github-achievements-guide
Key Features
- Achievement requirements and reference documentation.
- Progress and tier calculations.
- Node.js command-line interface.
- Markdown output.
- JSON output.
- No additional npm dependencies required for the CLI.
💻 5. Installation & Usage
Prerequisites
- Node.js 18 or newer.
- Internet connection.
- GitHub username.
Step 1 — Clone the Repository
git clone https://github.com/6t9xstar/github-achievements-guide.git cd github-achievements-guide Step 2 — Check Your Achievement Progress
node scripts/achievements.mjs YOUR_USERNAME Replace YOUR_USERNAME with your actual GitHub username.
Step 3 — Export Results
Markdown output
node scripts/achievements.mjs YOUR_USERNAME --format markdown Useful for documentation and GitHub profile READMEs.
JSON output
node scripts/achievements.mjs YOUR_USERNAME --format json Useful for automation and other developer tools.
Step 4 — Authentication
For higher API rate limits, configure a GitHub token using the supported GITHUB_TOKEN environment variable or GitHub CLI authentication.
Some achievement information requires GraphQL access.
Important limitation: Not every achievement can be measured automatically. Quickdraw, YOLO, and Pair Extraordinaire cannot currently be measured through the API data used by this script. The tool should not be treated as an official GitHub achievement verifier.
📦 6. Retired & Unavailable Achievements
Some GitHub achievements and historical profile badges are no longer awarded.
| Achievement | Status |
|---|---|
| Mars 2020 Contributor | Retired |
| Arctic Code Vault Contributor | Historical |
| Heart On Your Sleeve | Not currently awarded |
| Open Sourcerer | Not currently awarded |
Also, profile highlights such as GitHub Pro and Developer Program Member are not the same as GitHub Achievements.
🎯 7. Why I Built This Project
I wanted to bring GitHub achievement information into one practical developer resource.
Instead of switching between different pages and manually calculating progress, developers can explore the requirements and use a CLI for supported checks.
The project focuses on three things:
Clarity — Understand each achievement and its requirements.
Productivity — Check supported progress directly from your terminal.
Extensibility — Use Markdown and JSON output in other workflows.
🌟 8. Explore the Open-Source Project
GitHub Achievements Guide Explore the source code, review the documentation, report issues, and contribute improvements. 🔗 https://github.com/6t9xstar/github-achievements-guide License: MIT
Contributions are welcome!
If you find an outdated requirement, incorrect threshold, or missing achievement detail, feel free to open an issue or submit a pull request.
💬 9. Let's Talk
I'd love to hear from the developer community:
- How many GitHub Achievements have you unlocked?
- Which achievement was the hardest to earn?
- What new achievements should GitHub introduce?
Personally, I'd love to see achievements recognizing documentation, security research, testing, and long-term open-source maintenance.
Build useful things. Contribute to open source. Help other developers.
The achievements will follow naturally.
Disclosure: AI-assisted writing. Technical details should be verified against current GitHub documentation and the project's implementation before publication.
