Stop. Read This Before You Troll Sam Again.

You saw the memes. Ram Altman. Diwali jokes. Lord Ram jokes.

Everyone is laughing at Sam Altman for his RAM comment. I think he is right. And I will say why.

What He Actually Said

On Cheeky Pint podcast with John Collison on Oct 29 2026, Sam talked about global DRAM shortage.

He said "From a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5% of the time"

He also said data centers can put those resources to better use and that DRAM in personal computers spends most of its life idle, while servers in the cloud keep it working around the clock

That clip went viral with caption "Local inference is a terrible allocation of scarce resources."

Why People Started Trolling

Two reasons.

One, it sounds like OpenAI wants all RAM for themselves. People who love local models like Llama, Laguna, and others did not like it. Local means privacy. Local means you own your model.

Two, it is easy to meme. Sam changed his X name to Ram Altman after a user told him to. Indian internet made it a festival joke.

The Elon Part - My Opinion

Elon Musk is an asshole here. Alongside that he is a brilliant engineer. He did this on purpose to make this fire more big.

Elon posted a meme of Hans Landa from Inglourious Basterds mocking Sam with caption "You're hoarding DRAM instead of giving it to the cloud, right?" and wrote "The people deserve to have their RAM too!"

Elon knows DRAM shortage is real. He builds xAI. He builds data centers. He knows Sam is right on pure numbers.

But he also knows trolling Sam gives him free engagement and hurts his competitor. So he poured petrol on purpose.

Why Sam Is Actually Right

Simple math.

You buy 64GB RAM to run a 70B model locally. You use it 1 hour a day. Rest 23 hours it sits idle. That is 5% use.

In a data center, that same 64GB runs 24 hours for thousands of users. Use is 80 to 90%.

If world has limited DRAM, where should it go? Where it works all day. That is Sam's point. From global allocation view, he is right.

On Nov 4 Sam said "I actually do want the world to have tons of memory and people to put as much as they want in their computers". That is true too. He wants more memory factories. But right now we are short, so we must choose.

It Was Not Taken Out Of Context

Sam said it was taken out of context. It was not.

People heard the full line. They understood allocation logic.

They made it a joke and meme on purpose. Sarcasm on purpose. Not because they did not understand, but because memeing a billionaire is more fun than talking about DRAM supply chain.

Internet did not misunderstand. It chose to meme.

So What Now

Sam is right on economics. People are right on freedom. Both will live. Cloud for efficiency. Local for privacy and ownership.

We need more DRAM factories so we dont have to choose. Until then, stop saying Sam wants to steal your RAM. He wants more RAM for everyone, he just thinks data centers use it better right now.

What do you think? Is local worth 5% use for freedom?
