The Polkadot unbonding period is 28 days on the Polkadot relay chain, and when it ends your DOT does not move by itself: you must submit a second transaction called Withdraw Unbonded before the tokens become transferable. If you unbonded weeks ago and your DOT still shows as locked, the most common reason is that this final step has not been done yet.

This guide walks through the exact official steps for direct nominators and for nomination pool members, explains how to read the countdown, and shows what a "stuck" balance usually turns out to be. Always confirm the current numbers in the official Polkadot Wiki before you move funds, because parameters such as the unbonding period can change by on-chain governance, and changes to staking have been proposed there.

How Polkadot unbonding works

Staking on Polkadot has three separate states. Knowing which one you are in answers most questions.

  • Bonded. Your DOT is locked and backing your nominations or your pool. It earns rewards, and you cannot transfer it.
  • Unbonding. You asked to leave. The tokens stop earning and sit in an "unlocking" queue for the unbonding period, 28 days on Polkadot (7 days on Kusama, the canary network) at the time of writing. They are still locked during this time.
  • Unlocked but not withdrawn. The 28 days have passed. The tokens are no longer bonded, but the chain keeps them in the staking lock until you call Withdraw Unbonded. Your wallet still shows them as locked or frozen.

Only after the withdraw step does the balance become "transferable" and show up as free DOT you can send to an exchange or another address.

A few more details worth knowing, each worth checking in the official docs:

  • Unbonding is measured in eras. On Polkadot one era is 24 hours, so the 28-era period is 28 days, but the clock starts at the end of the era in which you unbonded, not at the exact minute you clicked.
  • You can have a limited number of separate unbonding requests queued at once (the limit has been 32). If you hit it, withdraw the finished ones first.
  • You can Rebond DOT that is still unbonding if you change your mind; this cancels the wait for that chunk.
  • A small amount of DOT must stay in the account as the existential deposit, and you need a little free DOT to pay the fee for the withdraw transaction itself.

Polkadot unbonding period: how to withdraw, step by step

The official tools are the Polkadot Staking Dashboard and the Polkadot-JS Apps interface. Both are linked from the Polkadot Wiki; always open them from the wiki or a bookmark rather than from a search ad or a message someone sent you.

If you nominated directly (solo nominator)

  1. Unbond. In the Staking Dashboard, open your nominator account and choose Unbond. Enter the amount, or choose the full amount to leave entirely. In Polkadot-JS Apps this is Network → Staking → Account actions → Unbond funds. Sign the transaction.
  2. Wait the unbonding period. The dashboard shows an "Unlocking" section with a countdown in eras or days. Nothing is required from you during this time.
  3. Withdraw Unbonded. When the countdown reaches zero, the same section shows a Withdraw button. In Polkadot-JS Apps the extrinsic is staking.withdrawUnbonded. Sign it and pay the small fee.
  4. Check the balance. Your transferable balance should now include the withdrawn DOT. If part of it is still locked, see the next section.

If you are in a nomination pool

Pool members follow the same rhythm with pool-specific buttons.

  1. Claim any rewards shown first. Open Pools in the Staking Dashboard and select your membership. If the pool page shows unclaimed rewards, use Claim before you unbond so the amounts are easy to follow. Pending rewards are normally paid out to you automatically when you unbond, but checking the pool page first avoids confusion later.
  2. Unbond from the pool. On the same page choose Unbond. You can unbond part or all of your points. Sign.
  3. Wait the unbonding period. The same 28 days applies on Polkadot. The pool page shows your unlocking chunks.
  4. Withdraw Unbonded. After the wait, the pool page offers Withdraw. In Polkadot-JS this is nominationPools.withdrawUnbonded. Sign it.
  5. Check the pool page for anything left. If you only unbonded part of your stake, the remainder keeps earning and may show new rewards behind the Claim button.

Fast unstake

Polkadot has a Fast Unstake option for accounts that have not been actively backing a validator (not "exposed") for the full unbonding period. If you nominated but your validators never got into the active set, this can return your DOT much sooner. The dashboard shows whether your account is eligible, and you should rely on that check before submitting. Do not assume you qualify: registering for fast unstake requires a deposit, and if the chain finds that your account was exposed during the period, the deposit may be forfeited and you go back to the normal 28-day route.

Why your DOT still shows as locked after 28 days

If the period has passed and the balance has not moved, work through this list in order.

  • Withdraw Unbonded was never submitted. This is the usual cause. The chain never withdraws for you. Open the dashboard and look for the Withdraw button.
  • The transaction was signed but failed. Check the account's history on Subscan. A failed extrinsic shows as such; a common reason is not enough free DOT to pay the fee.
  • You are counting from the wrong moment. The wait starts from the end of the era in which you unbonded, so a request made late in the day finishes up to a day later than a simple 28-day calendar count.
  • Only part of your stake was unbonded. If you unbonded 100 DOT out of 300, the other 200 are still bonded and still locked, by design.
  • Pool rewards look "missing". Pending pool rewards are normally paid out when you unbond, so they may already have arrived as free DOT days earlier. Check the account history on Subscan and the pool page for any rewards still shown as unclaimed.
  • The lock is something else. DOT can also be locked for governance votes, delegations, or a vesting schedule. The dashboard and Polkadot-JS Apps show each lock type separately. A governance lock has its own unlock period, unrelated to staking.

None of these situations means your DOT is lost. They all have a defined on-chain path to unlock.

Worked example (illustration only)

The numbers below are invented for illustration and are not anyone's real results.

Suppose Amara in Lagos has 250 DOT bonded as a solo nominator and decides to exit.

  • Day 0, 21:00 UTC. She signs Unbond for all 250 DOT. The current era ends a few hours later, so the 28-era countdown effectively starts from that era boundary.
  • Day 1 to Day 28. The dashboard shows 250 DOT under "Unlocking" with the eras remaining. Her wallet shows 250 DOT locked and about 1.5 DOT free, left over for fees.
  • Day 29. The countdown reads zero, but the wallet still shows 250 DOT locked. She opens the dashboard, clicks Withdraw, and signs. The fee is a fraction of a DOT.
  • A few seconds later. Transferable balance reads roughly 251.4 DOT. She sends 250 to her exchange and keeps the rest so the account stays above the existential deposit.

If Amara had closed the dashboard on Day 29 without clicking Withdraw, the 250 DOT would have stayed locked indefinitely, waiting for that one transaction. That is the "stuck" case people describe most often, and it is a missing click, not a lost balance.

How to check a wallet without connecting it

You do not need to connect a wallet or sign anything just to see where your DOT is. Paste the public address into Subscan and open the account page; it lists bonded, unlocking, and locked balances with the relevant extrinsics.

BOTLAB's StuckScan does a similar read-only check across 20 chains: paste a public wallet address and it shows what is in the wallet, staked, locked, pending, possibly stuck or ready to claim, with on-chain proof and what to do next. It is free, needs no sign-up, never asks you to connect a wallet, and never asks for a seed phrase or a fee. It does not yet check bridges, most DeFi positions (Aave v3 is the exception), or Solana stake accounts on the web page, so treat it as a first look rather than a full audit. Scan a wallet free

If you also stake on other networks, the same "wait, then withdraw manually" pattern appears elsewhere. See our guides on the Cosmos ATOM unbonding period, deactivated Solana stake accounts, and TRX unstake after 14 days.

Stay safe while your DOT is unbonding

The unbonding window is when people are most tempted to "speed things up", and that is exactly what scammers count on.

  • Nobody legitimate will ever ask for your seed phrase, your private key, or a fee to "release" or "recover" unbonded DOT. The withdraw step costs only the normal network fee, paid from your own account.
  • There is no support agent, validator, or pool operator who can shorten the 28 days for you. Only the chain's rules apply.
  • Open the Staking Dashboard and Polkadot-JS Apps from the official Polkadot Wiki. Fake copies with similar names exist.
  • Normal unbonding is not stuck. If the countdown is still running, the correct action is to wait.

FAQ

How long is the Polkadot unbonding period?

28 days on the Polkadot relay chain at the time of writing, counted in 28 eras of roughly 24 hours each, starting from the end of the era in which you unbonded. Kusama uses 7 days. Confirm the current value in the Polkadot Wiki, since governance can change it.

Does my DOT automatically become transferable after 28 days?

No. After the period ends you must sign a Withdraw Unbonded transaction (or the pool equivalent). Until then the DOT stays in the staking lock and shows as locked in your wallet.

Do I earn rewards while unbonding?

No. Rewards stop at the end of the era in which you unbond. If you are in a nomination pool, pending rewards are normally paid out to you when you unbond; use Claim for any rewards the pool page still shows before you unbond.

Can I cancel unbonding?

Yes. While a chunk is still in the unlocking queue, you can Rebond it, which returns it to bonded status immediately without waiting out the 28 days.

Key takeaways

  • Polkadot unbonding takes 28 days (confirm in the Polkadot Wiki), then requires a manual Withdraw Unbonded transaction.
  • Locked DOT after the countdown almost always means the withdraw step was skipped or failed for lack of fee balance.
  • Pool members claim any rewards shown, unbond, wait, and withdraw; pending rewards are normally paid out at unbonding.
  • Fast Unstake can help only if your account was never actively backing validators during the period; its deposit may be forfeited if you turn out to be ineligible, so rely on the dashboard's check first.
  • Check locks read-only on Subscan or with a scanner; never share a seed phrase or pay a recovery fee.
  • Waiting out a running countdown is normal, not stuck.
