Fix Shopify 2026-10 owner_type Metafield Errors: Migration Guide
The 2026-10 API version is live, and if your integration relies on the legacy metafieldsSet mutation with explicit owner_type parameters, you are likely seeing silent failures or hard 400 errors in production. Shopify has deprecated the owner_type argument in the metafieldsSet mutation for this release, enforcing strict type inference based on the owner_id prefix.
This is not a soft deprecation. If your code still passes owner_type: PRODUCT (or similar enums) alongside an owner_id that already contains the type prefix (e.g., gid://shopify/Product/12345), the API will reject the request. Worse, if you ignore the error logs and assume the write succeeded, you will experience data drift between your ERP and Shopify.
Here is how to fix this immediately.
The Problem: Explicit Type Enforcement
In API versions prior to 2026-10, the metafieldsSet mutation allowed developers to pass both owner_type and owner_id. While redundant, it was forgiving. If you passed owner_type: COLLECTION and owner_id: "gid://shopify/Collection/999", the API accepted it.
Starting with 2026-10, the owner_type argument has been removed from the mutation schema. The API now infers the owner type exclusively from the owner_id GID. If you attempt to send the owner_type field, the GraphQL parser throws a validation error: Field "owner_type" is not defined by type "MetafieldsSetInput".
Many developers encounter this not as a hard crash, but as a silent failure in batch jobs. If your error handling swallows GraphQL errors (a bad habit, by the way), your metafields simply don't update. Your inventory syncs, your pricing updates, but your custom B2B tier pricing or compliance flags never touch the database.
The Solution: Update Your Mutation Payload
You need to strip the owner_type argument from all metafieldsSet calls. The owner_id must remain a fully qualified GID.
Here is the correct mutation for the 2026-10 API:
mutation MetafieldsSet { metafieldsSet(metafields: [ { key: "b2b_tier_pricing" type: "json" value: "{\"wholesale_price\": 49.99, \"margin\": 0.25}" } ], owner_id: "gid://shopify/Product/7305496911363") { metafields { key value } userErrors { field message } } } Notice two things:
- No
owner_typefield. -
owner_idis a full GID, not a numeric ID.
If you are using a numeric ID (e.g., 7305496911363), the API will not infer the type. You must construct the GID string in your client code.
Client-Side Implementation in TypeScript
If you are using @shopify/shopify-api or a raw GraphQL client, update your helper functions. You should never store numeric IDs for metafield operations in 2026-10; always store or construct GIDs.
import { Admin } from '@shopify/shopify-api'; interface MetafieldInput { key: string; type: string; value: string; } /** * Sets a metafield on a resource. * @param admin - Shopify Admin API client * @param ownerId - Full GID (e.g., "gid://shopify/Product/12345") * @param metafields - Array of metafield objects */ export async function setMetafields( admin: Admin, ownerId: string, meta Originally published at arslanraza.com
