Hey devs 👋
I’m Muhammad, a Flutter developer from Pakistan. I recently built SnapGrab, a Flutter app where you paste a video link, see the available formats, and download in one tap.
How it works
Paste a video URL on the home screen
The app fetches the media info and lists the available formats and qualities
Tap Download and the file is saved to the device
Stack
Flutter (Material 3, light and dark themes)
State management: Provider
Networking package, e.g. http
Challenges I ran into
Background downloads on Android. Keeping long downloads alive across app restarts and battery optimization took the most trial and error.
Handling changing sources. Platforms change their pages and formats often, so I kept the extraction layer separate from the UI to make updates easy.
Play Store policy. Downloader apps get extra scrutiny. I read the policies carefully, and I recommend you do too before building anything similar.
A note on responsible use
SnapGrab is meant for content users own or have permission to save. Downloading other people’s videos can violate platform terms and copyright law, so users are responsible for how they use it. If you build something similar, consider adding a clear disclaimer in the app and on your store listing.
What’s next
Planned features, e.g. download queue, Wi-Fi-only downloads, built-in player
I’d love feedback from the community:
How do you handle reliable background downloads in Flutter?
Any tips for passing Play Store review on a utility app like this?
