Have you ever wondered how websites manage to handle so many people visiting them at the same time?
I used to think that companies needed to buy more computers and install them in a special room whenever they wanted to run bigger websites. But after learning about cloud computing, I discovered that there is another way to do this without buying all the physical equipment yourself.
This is where IaaS comes in.
Imagine you have a small business and decide to create a website for it. At first, only a few people visit your website, so you don’t need much computing power. But as your business grows, more people start visiting, and your website needs more resources to keep running properly.
Buying new servers every time your website grows can be expensive. This is one of the problems that Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) helps to solve.
What is IaaS?
IaaS stands for Infrastructure as a Service. It is a type of cloud computing that allows people and businesses to rent computing resources over the internet instead of buying physical servers.
These resources can include virtual machines, storage, and networking services.
In simple terms, instead of buying a server and keeping it in your office, you can rent one from a cloud provider and use it for your projects.
Think of it like renting a house. You don’t have to build the house yourself before you can live in it. You rent it and use the space according to your needs.
IaaS works in a similar way. The cloud provider manages the physical servers and other hardware, while you use the resources to run your applications.
However, you still have responsibilities. For example, if you rent a virtual machine, you may need to install software, manage the operating system, and make sure your application is secure.

The Case Study: Amazon Web Services (AWS)
To understand IaaS better, I decided to look at Amazon Web Services, commonly known as AWS.
AWS is a cloud computing platform that provides different services to individuals, developers, and businesses. One of its services is Amazon EC2, which allows users to create virtual servers in the cloud.
Let’s say you want to build a website for an online shop. You need a server where your website can run and store or process information.
Instead of buying a physical server, you can use Amazon EC2 to create a virtual machine and deploy your website on it.
What makes this interesting is that you can choose the type of virtual machine you need and change your setup as your project grows.
Here are some things I found interesting about using AWS for IaaS.

  1. You can create a server without buying one. One thing I find useful about AWS is that you don’t need to purchase a physical server before starting your project. You can create a virtual server through the AWS console and use it to run your website or application. This can be helpful for students, developers, and small businesses that want to build projects without investing a lot of money in hardware.
  2. You can increase your resources when needed. Imagine your website is getting more visitors than usual. Your server might struggle to handle all the requests. With AWS, you have options for increasing your computing capacity. For example, you can use a larger EC2 instance or add more instances to support your application. AWS also provides a service called EC2 Auto Scaling, which can automatically adjust the number of instances according to rules you configure. This means you don’t always have to make these changes manually.
  3. You pay for the resources you use. Another thing I learned is that using cloud infrastructure can reduce the need for large upfront investments in physical hardware. Instead of buying a server that may be too powerful for your current needs, you can start with suitable cloud resources and adjust them as your project develops. However, you still need to monitor your usage because cloud services are not always free, and leaving resources running unnecessarily can increase your bill.
  4. You can work on projects from different locations. Since cloud infrastructure is available over the internet, developers can manage their servers without being physically present in the same location as the hardware. For example, a developer can manage a server hosted by AWS while working from home, school, or an office. This makes cloud infrastructure convenient for people who develop and maintain websites and applications remotely. 4 Things I Learned About IaaS While learning about IaaS and AWS, I came across a few things that helped me understand why this technology is useful.
  5. You don’t always need physical hardware to start a project. Before learning about cloud computing, it was easy to assume that running an application required owning a server. With IaaS, you can rent computing resources and start working on your project without purchasing the physical equipment yourself.
  6. Cloud computing can make life easier for developers. Developers can create virtual machines, install the software they need, and test their applications without setting up a physical server room. This can save time and make it easier to experiment with different configurations.
  7. Security is still important. Even though the cloud provider manages the physical infrastructure, that doesn’t mean your application is automatically secure. You still need to use strong passwords, manage permissions carefully, configure firewalls, and protect your data.
  8. You need to understand the cost before using cloud services. I also learned that renting a server doesn’t mean everything is free or automatically cheap. Depending on the services you use, you may have to pay for computing time, storage, and data transfer. It is important to understand the pricing and remove resources you no longer need to avoid unnecessary charges. Conclusion Learning about IaaS has helped me understand that there is another way to manage computing infrastructure without buying and maintaining physical servers. Amazon Web Services is one example of a platform that makes this possible through services such as Amazon EC2. Developers and businesses can create virtual servers, run applications, and increase their computing resources as their needs change. I think one of the most interesting things about IaaS is that it gives people the opportunity to start small and grow their projects without having to invest heavily in physical hardware from the beginning. Of course, you still need to understand how to manage your servers, protect your applications, and control your spending. I’m still learning about cloud computing, but I can already see why it has become an important part of modern IT. What do you think? If you were building your first website, would you prefer to use a cloud server or buy your own physical server?
