Stopping Memory Poisoning: Human-in-the-Loop Draft Editing with Hindsight
The most dangerous bug in stateful AI agents isn't forgetting—it's remembering the wrong thing. If a customer support LLM hallucinates an inaccurate workaround or uses the wrong tone, and your backend blindly commits every turn to persistent storage, you get Memory Poisoning. Next week, when that same customer returns, the retrieval layer will faithfully pull the hallucinated answer back into the system prompt, compounding the error indefinitely.
While architecting the feedback loop for our support engine (hindsight-customer-support-agent), I wanted a mechanism that lets human support engineers intercept, edit, and permanently correct the agent's memory in real time. Using Vectorize agent memory, we built an Inline Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) Draft Editor that turns human corrections into high-priority memories on Hindsight Cloud.
How Human-Corrected Retention Works
In a production support workflow (such as Zendesk or Intercom copilot mode), an AI agent drafts a reply, and a senior support engineer either approves it or edits it before sending. In our system, every assistant message in app.py renders with two action controls:
-
✅ Approve Reply: Marks the resolution as verified in the session log. -
✏️ Edit Draft: Opens an inline editor pre-populated with the AI's draft. When the human engineer modifies the technical fix and clicks💾 Save & Retain Edited Reply, the system immediately writes the corrected resolution back toapi.hindsight.vectorize.iousing thehindsight-clientSDK.
You can check out the open-source SDK architecture on the Hindsight GitHub repository.
Code Walkthrough: Inline Editing and Context-Tagged Retention
In app.py, we track active draft edits per customer persona and message index using Streamlit's session state (st.session_state.editing_message). When a support operator clicks ✏️ Edit Draft, the chat bubble transforms into an interactive correction form:
edit_key = f"edit_{selected_cid}_{idx}" if st.session_state.editing_message == edit_key: edited_text = st.text_area( "Edit Support Draft:", value=msg["content"], height=150, key=f"textarea_{edit_key}" ) save_col, cancel_col = st.columns(2) with save_col: if st.button("💾 Save & Retain Edited Reply", key=f"save_{edit_key}", use_container_width=True): # 1. Update local UI transcript st.session_state.chat_histories[selected_cid][idx]["content"] = edited_text # 2. Commit human-verified correction to Hindsight Cloud correction_payload = ( f"[HUMAN-VERIFIED CORRECTION] Customer ({selected_cid}) issue context | " f"Verified Support Resolution: {edited_text}" ) retain_human_correction( customer_id=selected_cid, corrected_content=correction_payload ) st.session_state.editing_message = None st.toast("✅ Human-edited reply saved & retained to Hindsight Cloud!") st.rerun() Inside agent.py, retain_human_correction calls hindsight.retain() with an explicit context="human_corrected_support_interaction" tag and a UTC ISO timestamp so temporal retrieval prioritizes the human override over earlier unverified drafts:
def retain_human_correction(customer_id: str, corrected_content: str) -> bool: try: hindsight.retain( bank_id=customer_id, content=corrected_content, context="human_corrected_support_interaction", timestamp=datetime.now(timezone.utc).isoformat() ) return True except Exception: # Fallback for basic SDK signature compatibility hindsight.retain(bank_id=customer_id, content=corrected_content) return True To see how context tags and timestamps influence retrieval ranking, consult the Hindsight documentation.
Concrete Example: Fixing a Billing & SLA Response Live
Consider Maria (cust_002), an Operations Lead managing an Enterprise subscription who recently upgraded seats mid-cycle and was promised a $150 prorated credit on her upcoming invoice.
- Initial AI Draft: Maria asks "Can you confirm my credit amount and where the updated PDF invoice will be sent?" Suppose the agent recalls the $150 credit accurately from
cust_002, but drafts a reply stating invoices are sent to the default admin portal. - Human Inline Correction: The support engineer clicks
✏️ Edit Draft, updates the text to specify "Your $150 prorated credit is applied, and per your updated routing rule, all PDF invoices are dispatched directly tobilling-ops@enterprise.ioon the 1st of the month," and clicks💾 Save & Retain Edited Reply. - Future Recall Verification: We click
🗑️ Reset UI Chatand ask "Where do my monthly PDF invoices go?" Because the human edit was retained to Hindsight Cloud undercust_002with[HUMAN-VERIFIED CORRECTION], the agent immediately recallsbilling-ops@enterprise.ioon the very next turn.
Key Engineering Takeaways
- Treat Human Edits as Ground-Truth Memory Writes: Every time a human operator edits an AI draft in a copilot UI, that diff is the highest-signal training data in your organization. Retaining it directly to Hindsight closes the learning loop immediately.
- Tag Memory Provenance: Distinguishing between
support_interaction(auto-retained) andhuman_corrected_support_interactionprevents unverified LLM outputs from overriding human ground truth. - Rapid Prototyping with Guardrails: Leveraging AI coding tools like Code.in alongside deterministic state dictionaries in Streamlit allowed us to ship inline editing without breaking conversation indexing.
