CVE-2026-101909: Exploitation Preconditions for the Axios Gadget
Security teams need a clear answer to a practical question about CVE-2026-101909: what must be true before an attacker can use the Axios form serialization issue? The advisory gives a narrow answer. The process must already contain a prototype pollution primitive, and the application must invoke an affected form serialization path.
Axios does not create the inherited property. That fact changes the threat model. A scanner that finds an affected Axios version has found a susceptible dependency, but it has not proved that the application is exploitable. Analysts should test the surrounding conditions before assigning a high operational risk.
Condition one: a polluted prototype
The attacker or another vulnerability must be able to place behavior-affecting values on Object.prototype. This can happen through a dependency that merges untrusted input with insufficient key filtering, a recursive assignment helper, or another prototype pollution bug in the same process.
The polluted values described by the advisory are visitor, maxDepth, dots, indexes, metaTokens, and Blob. The form serializer reads those values without own-property guards. A property inherited from Object.prototype can therefore influence serialization as though the request had selected it.
Condition two: an affected form path
The application must call axios.toFormData() or a related path that turns a plain object into multipart/form-data or URL-encoded form data. A JSON request does not meet this condition. A request that never calls the form helper does not meet it either.
The vulnerability has practical relevance for file upload clients, form submission tools, API wrappers that send nested objects, and services that translate application objects into form fields. It has less relevance for a program that only makes simple JSON API calls.
Condition three: meaningful influence
The attacker also needs the polluted value to produce a useful effect. Inherited dots or indexes values can change field names. An inherited metaTokens value can alter metadata markers. A low maxDepth value can force an error on nested data and produce denial of service.
An inherited function-valued visitor has the highest potential effect because the serializer can call it while processing key-value pairs. The advisory cautions that this condition generally implies a stronger same-process primitive. A defender should not describe it as a remote code execution vulnerability without evidence of function injection.
What a finding means
An affected Axios version in a development environment is still worth upgrading, but the exposure depends on the running code path. An internet-facing form service with a known prototype pollution source deserves faster action than a build tool that only sends JSON and never reaches the form helper.
Review the dependency tree, the application route, and the serializer arguments together. Check whether the process accepts object keys from untrusted input. Look for merge utilities that preserve dangerous prototype keys. If the application uses a local wrapper, verify that it does not bypass the patched form path.
Fixed versions and workaround
Upgrade Axios 0.x to 0.34.0 or later, and Axios 1.x to 1.20.0 or later. The affected ranges are 0.28.0 through below 0.34.0 and 1.15.1 through below 1.20.0.
Applications that cannot upgrade immediately can avoid serializing attacker-controlled objects as form data in a polluted process. They can also pass an own formSerializer object with explicit values for all relevant properties. That workaround prevents inherited defaults from being used, but it does not fix the pollution source.
Exposure context
ZoomEye Search app="Node.js" returned 5,547,929 application fingerprint matches. The exact CVE Filter returned 0. The Exposure is 5,547,929, but it does not establish the presence of vulnerable Axios code or a prototype pollution path.

No CISA KEV entry or confirmed in-the-wild exploitation was found in the reviewed sources as of 2026-11-08. The advisory rates the issue High with CVSS 4.0 score 8.3.
