Short videos are where a lot of ideas live now, but TikTok and Instagram don't give you a "copy transcript" button. Here are three ways to get the words out of a Reel or a TikTok, from zero setup to fully local.

1. Read the auto captions in the app (free, no export)

Many TikToks and Reels show auto-generated captions. They're fine for reading along, but you can't copy or download them, and they only exist if the creator turned them on.

2. Download and run Whisper yourself (free, some setup)

If you're comfortable with a terminal:

yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 "<tiktok or instagram link>"

then transcribe the MP3 with faster-whisper or whisper.cpp. TikTok links usually work directly; Instagram often needs cookies from a logged-in browser (--cookies-from-browser chrome). Use the large-v3 model if accuracy matters.

3. Paste the link into a transcription site (no setup)

Web tools fetch the video for you and return text in a few seconds. I built one, TranscribeLink: paste a public TikTok, Instagram Reel, YouTube or X link and you get a word-for-word transcript with punctuation, in the language that was spoken. It can label speakers, translate into 50+ languages and export TXT, DOCX, PDF or SRT. The first 20 minutes are free without an account. Other tools exist too; pick whichever fits your volume and budget.

Things that trip people up

  • Private or followers-only posts can't be fetched by any tool. The video has to be public.
  • Music-only clips have no speech. A good tool says "no speech found" instead of inventing lyrics.
  • Names and slang get misheard. Skim the transcript before you quote it.
  • Respect the creator. Quote with credit, and only reuse content you have the right to use.
