What happened: OpenAI says the volume of search queries processed by ChatGPT has reached about 20 percent of Google's query volume. Adam Fry, OpenAI's consumer product lead for ChatGPT, gave the figure at a press event on Monday and repeated it in an interview with Big Technology. By OpenAI's definition, a search is any user query that triggers a web search, while simple definitions or how-to explanations do not count. Fry said those searches cover lookups of a person, a place or a thing, along with finance and health questions where up-to-date information matters. The company did not disclose where its Google comparison figure came from, so the ratio stands as OpenAI's own estimate rather than an independent measurement.
The context makes the claim notable. When Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella testified in Google's 2023 antitrust trial, he said Bing had reached only about 3 percent of search market share after more than a decade of trying. Fry also noted that ChatGPT search launched only about a year and a half ago, which makes the one-fifth figure an unusually steep climb by either yardstick — with the caveat that the two numbers measure different things, market share versus query volume.
How it works: search inside ChatGPT feeds what OpenAI calls Intelligent UI, a response surface with visual and interactive elements instead of a plain list of links. “You're talking to a canvas,” Fry told reporters. The company is also extending advertising: last month it began introducing images of sponsored products inside ChatGPT, beyond the earlier format of a company name, logo and link.
On monetization, Fry said that ads have not negatively impacted the product or the usage of the product, and that most people do not seem to mind them — that account comes from OpenAI itself. The backdrop is OpenAI's reported preparation for a potential IPO as early as 2027, which would make advertising a more central part of the business.
IMPACT: conversational assistants are absorbing search behavior at a pace traditional engines never managed, if OpenAI's numbers are even directionally right. The practical consequence for publishers and marketers is a slow rerouting of web queries away from the search box and into chat surfaces, where answers, sponsored content and interactive results arrive in the same stream.
