PhotoPrism's October 2026 update introduces experimental PostgreSQL support, a major GORM library upgrade, and Model Context Protocol integration for AI assistants.

It also brings default OAuth authentication, new export options, and upstream dependency updates including Go and libheif.

New connectivity and artificial intelligence capabilities

The update adds experimental support for PostgreSQL databases and upgrades the GORM data management library from version 1.9.16 to 1.31.2, along with a new data transfer command.

MCP integration allows AI assistants and compatible apps to search and browse photo libraries, following the permissions of each account. OAuth authentication has been added to connect external apps and remote clients. This feature is enabled by default, but can be disabled globally or per account.

Better file management and maps

A new export window has been added to the photo viewer, allowing users to select specific file sizes and formats when downloading.

In Maps, the default planet view is now based on data from OpenStreetMap, while the 3D Earth has gained a starry background and atmospheric effects. The developers also fixed an issue with zooming in the location window when gestures were disabled.

Security fixes and upgrades

Several changes concern photo metadata, correcting incorrect time zones in Pacific regions, date issues, and inconsistencies in focus data. Issues with face selection boxes when zooming, database hangs when updating tags, and errors when capturing video have also been resolved.

In terms of security and infrastructure, key libraries such as libheif have been updated to version 1.23.7, the Go language to 1.27.3, and the ONNX Runtime to 1.31.0 with telemetry disabled. Graphics card drivers for AMD and Intel have been added to the launch points, the default AI model has been updated, and a rule has been set so that new usernames only contain standard characters.

During scanning and synchronization, files and folders with unsupported names will be skipped. The developers recommend using the official installation tools on private computers or storage devices and taking a backup of the database before upgrading.
