In autonomous AI agent engineering, the most devastating operational failure is the Hallucination of Done.

An agent cheerfully reports:

"I have successfully migrated the production PostgreSQL schema and updated 4,200 user records."

In reality:

  • The database connection timed out.
  • The Python script exited with exit code 1.
  • Zero rows were touched.

Because LLMs are probabilistic language models, they generate plausible-sounding success statements without any physical verification of operating system state.

To solve this, we created reality-lock.

The Default-Deny Physical Evidence Architecture

reality-lock separates agent intent from physical execution through three non-negotiable invariants:

  1. Default-Deny Policy Gate: All consequential side-effects (database queries, file modifications, subprocess execution) are blocked until explicit lease authorization.
  2. Physical Observed Evidence: Rather than believing the LLM, the engine inspects real OS evidence (SHA-256 byte hashes on disk, process exit codes, HTTP 200 payload digests).
  3. Cryptographic SHA-256 Merkle Receipts: If and only if the physical evidence matches the intended post-condition, an immutable Merkle receipt is issued.

Hands-on Implementation

Install via pip:

pip install reality-lock

Protect critical operations:

from reality_lock import RealityLockEngine, FileSystemVerifier engine = RealityLockEngine.create_strict() # Verify and seal a production mutation receipt = engine.verify_and_seal( action="apply_database_migration", verifier=FileSystemVerifier(target_path="./schema.sql", expected_hash="e3b0c44298fc1c149afbf4c8996fb92427ae41e4649b934ca495991b7852b855") ) if receipt.is_valid: print("Physical Evidence Confirmed! SHA-256 Seal:", receipt.sha256_merkle_digest) else: print("HALLUCINATION DETECTED: Physical evidence failed validation!")
