CachyOS, the Arch-based distribution engineered for high performance, is now officially supported on Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).
Microsoft is actively working to include it in the platform's official distribution list.
Developers can currently perform a manual install using the provided GitHub image on WSL 2 (version 2.4.4+), which features automatic repository optimization based on local hardware architecture.
Craig Lowen, Microsoft's product manager for the environment, confirmed that the company is working with the CachyOS team to officially add the operating system to the list of available options. Until that process is complete, interested parties can install it themselves using a special file provided by the development team.
How is the installation done?
According to the official documents, the installation requires a specific updated version of the Windows environment or later. Users can download the special file from the project page and install it by double-clicking or typing a short command. Then the system can be opened either from the Windows start menu or by typing a command.
The first time CachyOS is opened, the system automatically configures itself: it prepares the necessary digital security keys, chooses the best servers for downloading files, configures the appropriate storage areas, and asks the user to create an account with administrator rights. Fish is set as the default command environment.
What users should watch out for
The installation works on any processor, while the initial setup automatically selects the best options for the computer's hardware, adjusting depending on whether it is a newer or older processor.

However, CachyOS in this environment cannot use the special kernel, processor management programs, or other special tools of the regular version, because it uses the kernel provided by Microsoft. It also lacks the boot manager, hardware detection tools, and a memory management tool.
Because this operating system is constantly updated and the installation files are created periodically, the creators recommend updating the system immediately after completing the setup.
