AI Slop and the Software Commons
arXiv cs.SE0 views
arXiv:2604.16754v4 Announce Type: replace Abstract: We argue that AI slop in software development is creating a tragedy of the commons. Slop is cheap to generate but expensive to review, and its costs fall on shared resources such as reviewer capacity, which was limited even before AI assistants became widespread. Ostrom documented how communities avoid such tragedies by setting and enforcing their own rules. We translate Ostrom's design principles for sustainable commons institutions into concrete proposals for contributors, reviewers, tool developers, team leads, organizational leaders, and educators.
