AWS completed an operational independence test for its European Sovereign Cloud, disabling the global network and data transfer systems to verify autonomous regional operation without non-EU dependencies.
During the exercise, the AWS team took down two critical systems connected to the company’s global infrastructure: the core network (AWS Global Network) and the dedicated system that manages operational data transport. Despite the disconnect, data traffic was safely rerouted over the public internet, ensuring that customer applications and services remained fully operational and accessible. This process did not impact the availability of the remaining AWS regions or private Direct Connect connectivity.
The AWS European Sovereign Cloud, which became fully available in January 2026 with its first infrastructure in Brandenburg, is designed to operate as a physically and logically separated environment. All customer data and metadata remain within the EU, while the platform is managed by European legal entities under German law. In addition, the system is controlled and supported by personnel based in Europe, with AWS gradually promoting an exclusively EU-based staffing model.
Successful completion of the test provides public sector and regulated organizations with concrete technical evidence to document their digital dominance. As noted by the company, these results can be leveraged by customers in their communications with regulators and boards, providing transparent evidence of the operational resilience and compliance of the systems they use.
