How Global Is Anycast?: Evaluating Performance Gaps
arXiv cs.NI0 views
arXiv:2610.40833v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Anycast networks aim to reduce latency by directing users to nearby service sites. However, users can still experience high latency even when accessing services via anycast. Some anycast deployments are localized and intended to serve a specific geographic region, while others are globally distributed to support users worldwide, with the expectation of consistently low latency across locations. In practice, latency can remain poor for certain users due to factors such as routing inefficiencies and peering relationships. These inefficiencies are often more pronounced in regions such as Africa, Asia or South America, where Internet connectivity is generally less mature than in North America or Europe. Despite this, there has been no in-depth analysis of anycast performance in these continents. In this paper, we examine the latency experienced by users in these regions when accessing anycast networks. We analyze more than 10,000 anycast prefixes, quantify the severity of latency problems, and show that clients in Africa, Asia, and South America experience substantially higher latency than those in North America. We also investigate the underlying causes of this performance gap.
