OpenAI has rolled out Images 2.6, the latest update to ChatGPT's image tools — and this time the headline feature is GIFs. Announced on November 5, the update adds GIF creation, better editing controls and faster models for developers.
GIFs come to ChatGPT
ChatGPT can now turn a still image into a short looping GIF, or generate one from a text prompt. The clips can run for up to 10 seconds, at 480p or 720p, and hit 50 frames per second. That is smooth enough for reaction clips, birthday messages and social posts — and it means you no longer have to take a ChatGPT image to another app just to animate it.
Sora gets the same treatment: GIFs made in the Sora app can now be shared straight to social feeds.
Editing gets a lot more control
The update also brings multi-image inpainting, so you can blend parts of several pictures into one new image. You can feed in up to 16 images at once and get up to four versions back, and a prompt can now reference up to three images at the same time — handy when you want a character or product to look the same across a set of pictures.
Text inside images can be edited too, pictures can go up to 16 megapixels (4,096 x 4,096), and transparent PNGs are now supported. OpenAI has also added image search to the API, so developers can build tools that find pictures by what they show.
Faster models, new prices
Under the hood, GPT Image 1.5 is now about four times faster than the older GPT Image 1, and there is a new GPT Image 1.5 Mini for jobs where speed and cost matter more. Existing GPT-4o and GPT-5 API users get the new models without changing their code.
Pricing has shifted too: GPT Image 1.5 costs $0.01 per megapixel for inputs and $0.02 for outputs, while the Mini version costs $0.002 in and $0.004 out. The older GPT Image 1 keeps its old pricing.
When you can try it
Images 2.6 is live now for ChatGPT paid plans and through the API, with free users to follow shortly. In India, the rollout is set to reach users by November 10.
GIFs are the fun part of this release, but the editing and speed gains are the parts that will stick around. ChatGPT's image tools are moving from novelty toward something you would reach for at work.
