Imagine hiring a developer who can build complete applications using AI but struggles to write or debug basic code independently.
Would you still hire them?
AI coding tools are changing how developers work. Building websites, creating components, and implementing features has become significantly faster. Even beginners can now create projects that previously required considerable programming experience.
But there is a difference between generating code and understanding it.
What happens when AI generates incorrect code? What happens when an application breaks in production? Can a developer identify the problem without asking AI to rewrite everything?
Personally, I think using AI is becoming an important development skill. However, understanding the code you ship should remain a responsibility.
Companies hiring developers might need to evaluate problem-solving, debugging, and code understanding rather than simply measuring how quickly someone writes code.
Even professional developers working on custom web development services need to understand the applications they build, regardless of whether AI helps them write the code.
Would you hire a developer who depends heavily on AI, or do you believe programming fundamentals and independent problem-solving should still be essential? Have you experienced this in real projects or interviews?
