Most people searching for a Google Call Screen alternative are in one of two spots: they have an iPhone and envy the Pixel feature that answers unknown callers for them, or they have a Samsung, Motorola or other Android phone where Call Screen is missing or limited. The honest answer first: if you own a supported Pixel, Google Call Screen is free, built in, works before your phone even rings and is very good, so you may not need anything else. If you don't, or if you want an AI assistant that takes the whole message, writes it up and can also make calls for you, Assindo is the alternative this article compares it with. Every Google detail below comes from Google's own help pages, as of November 2026.
Quick Answer: Is Assindo a Good Google Call Screen Alternative?
- Google Call Screen is better at stopping spam before it rings, on a supported Pixel. It is free, runs on the device, hangs up on spam automatically and lets you screen any call with one tap.
- Assindo is better if you are not on a Pixel, if you want the caller's full message turned into a summary and transcript, or if you also want an AI agent to call businesses for you.
- The key difference: Call Screen intercepts calls as they arrive. Assindo handles the calls you don't pick up, through conditional call forwarding from your own number.
- Cost: Call Screen costs nothing. Assindo is a paid app starting at $9.99 a month.
- Availability: Call Screen's automatic mode is limited to Pixel phones in five countries. Assindo works on any iPhone or Android phone and on the web, in supported countries (not India).
What Google Call Screen Does Well
Call Screen lives in the Phone by Google app as part of Google's Call Assist features, and on a Pixel it is one of the best things about the phone.
Automatic screening. Call Assist answers unknown or suspicious calls on its own. Spam is hung up, other calls ring through after the caller explains themselves, and you get a silent notification with a live transcript. On newer Pixels you can choose how much to screen, including spam, possibly faked numbers and first-time callers.
Manual screening. Any incoming call can be screened by tapping Screen call. Call Assist asks who is calling and why, and you can reply with presets like "Is it urgent?" or "I'll call you back", or with AI-generated replies, then pick up or hang up.
Privacy. Google says Call Screen works on the device without Wi-Fi or mobile data, and screened calls are not saved to your Google Account. Transcripts stay on the phone, with optional audio.
The rest of the toolkit. Pixel owners also get Take a Message, which answers calls you miss or decline, transcribes the message and flags spam, at no charge. Hold for Me waits on hold for you, and Direct My Call shows phone menu options as buttons. That is a lot of value for a feature set that comes free with the phone.
Where Google Call Screen Stops
The limits are mostly about who can get it.
- No iPhone version. Call Screen is part of an Android app. iPhone has its own built-in screening (more on that below), but not Google's.
- Non-Pixel Android gets less. Google offers only manual Call Screen on other Android phones, only in the US and Canada, and only on "selected" devices. If your Phone app has no Call Screen settings, your phone does not support it.
- Automatic screening is five countries. On Pixel it is available in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK and the US. Manual screening adds France, Germany, India (newest Pixel 10 and 11 models only), Italy, Japan and Spain, with a SIM from a supported country.
- It does not run while roaming, and may not run with headphones or Bluetooth connected, depending on the model.
- It screens, it doesn't converse. Call Screen asks who is calling and why and shows you the answer. It doesn't hold a back-and-forth to collect the details you'd need to call someone back.
- It never calls anyone. Screening is incoming only. Gemini's separate Call for Me can call businesses, but as of September 2026 only as an early preview for paid Gemini subscribers on Pixel 11 phones in the US.
How Assindo Works Instead
Assindo is an AI phone assistant for iPhone, Android and the web. Instead of living inside your phone's dialer, it sits behind your number.
Setup. You keep your own phone number and turn on conditional call forwarding; the app dials your carrier's forwarding code for you. From then on, calls you don't pick up go to the assistant instead of voicemail.
On the call. The assistant asks who is calling and why, screens out spam, sales calls and robocalls, and takes the message from real callers. You then get a summary plus the full transcript in the app. Incoming calls are unlimited on every plan (fair use).
Outgoing calls. This is the part Call Screen does not cover. Ask Assindo to call a business, or to find one ("a plumber near me") and call it. It works through the phone menu, waits on hold, talks to the person, books the appointment or gets the answer, and reports back with an outcome, summary and transcript. Calls usually take 2 to 5 minutes, you can listen in or steer, and they happen during business hours. It won't pretend to be you, can't pass voice or identity checks, and won't redial someone who just declined. You can also start calls from Claude, ChatGPT and other tools through the Assindo MCP connector; see using Assindo in Claude.

When Google Call Screen Is the Better Choice
Be honest with yourself about what you need. Call Screen wins clearly if:
- You have a supported Pixel in a supported country. It is free, already installed, and it stops spam before you hear a ring. A paid app cannot beat free and built in for basic spam filtering.
- Spam is your only problem. If what you want is fewer robocalls and you rarely miss important calls, Call Screen plus Take a Message covers it.
- You want everything on the device. Call Screen processes calls locally and keeps transcripts on your phone. With Assindo, calls forward off the phone to the service.
- You want to screen calls you can see ringing. Tapping Screen call mid-ring is something call forwarding can't do, because Assindo only hears calls you let go.
When Assindo Is the Better Choice
- You have an iPhone. Call Screen is not an option. iPhone's own Ask Reason for Calling setting is a solid built-in start (see our Google Call Screen vs iPhone call screening comparison), and Assindo adds the full message, summary and transcript for the calls you miss.
- You have a non-Pixel Android phone, or you are outside the five automatic-screening countries.
- Missed calls cost you something. If you run a small business or a busy household, a written summary with a callback reason is worth more than a spam filter. Our guide to the cost of missed calls for small businesses runs the numbers.
- You also have calls to make. Rescheduling a dentist, chasing a refund, getting quotes: Assindo's AI agent makes those calls, waits on hold and reports back, from any phone.
Assindo's honest limits: it is a paid app with no free plan (the Personal plan is $9.99 a month; monthly Professional at $24.99 and Business at $59.99 come with a 3-day free trial, and yearly plans with 7 days), the app UI is English only (the assistant's call language can be changed in Settings > Edit Profile), it is not available in India, and it is not a caller-ID database or a system-level spam blocker.
Can You Use Both on a Pixel?
Yes, with one caveat Google spells out: don't combine automatic Call Screen with call forwarding, because screened calls are not forwarded. If you want Assindo to handle your missed calls on a Pixel, the cleaner setup is to keep manual Call Screen for calls you see ringing and let unanswered calls forward to Assindo. Test it once by calling yourself from another phone and letting it ring out.
Who Should Pick Which
- Pixel owner, mostly spam calls: stay with Google Call Screen. It is free and excellent.
- Pixel owner who misses important calls or has calls to make: keep manual Call Screen, add Assindo for missed calls and outgoing calls.
- iPhone owner: turn on Ask Reason for Calling first; add Assindo if you want full messages, summaries, and calls made for you.
- Samsung or other Android owner: check your Phone app for screening (Samsung's Galaxy S26 series has its own AI Call screening); Assindo fills the gaps on any model.
- Small business owner: Assindo, for the summaries and the outgoing calls. See our AI agent for small business guide.
