Power-ups are easy to add and hard to make meaningful. A speed boost, a shield, a magnet: every runner has them. In AI Rush, a free 3D endless runner you play in the browser, I tried to let the theme decide what the power-ups are. This post is about that process.

The premise

You play Hydro AI, a robot running through a smart city. Obstacles are lasers, drones, security bots and rolling power cells. The robot runs on water and electricity, so the power-ups come from those two resources.

When the theme and mechanics share a vocabulary, players learn faster. Nobody needs a tutorial to guess what "Hydro Shield" does.

Two resources, four power-ups

You collect water and electricity as you run. Those feed four effects:

  • Hydro Shield protects you from a hit.
  • Lightning Dash gets you through danger quickly.
  • Water Jet clears the way ahead.
  • Battery Overdrive boosts your run.

I like this structure for a reason: collecting two simple things creates choice. A runner that offers one pickup type gives you no decisions. A runner with a dozen overwhelms. Two resources and four outcomes is a small enough space to understand and big enough to feel clever.

Obstacles that teach

Each obstacle should demand a slightly different response, otherwise they are just reskins of the same hazard.

  • Lasers read as "go around or through the gap."
  • Drones move, so they demand timing.
  • Security bots occupy space, so they push you to change lane.
  • Rolling power cells come at you, so they reward a quick reaction.

If every obstacle asks the same question, the game gets dull quickly.

Unlocks as a long-term goal

There are 4 unlockable robots. Unlocks matter in an endless runner because there is no final level. They give a reason to keep going even when a personal best is out of reach.

Why "3D" in the browser

Players searching for 3D endless runner games or 3D running games are often disappointed by pages that need a plugin or a download. AI Rush runs in the browser with no install. That constraint pushed me to keep scenes light and the obstacle set readable at speed on a phone.

Takeaways

  1. Let the theme name the mechanics.
  2. Keep the resource space small.
  3. Make each hazard ask a different question.
  4. Give endless games something to unlock.

Try it

AI Rush is free to play in the browser, with no sign-up.
