Hey HN!
Last September I moved to Barcelona for a university exchange and thought it was the perfect moment to finally learn Spanish. I prepared with Duolingo, but as soon as I arrived, it didn't feel right anymore. Here's what I was missing:
I wanted to actually use the language, but in a safe environment. For example, practising ordering in a restaurant in an app before trying it in real life.
When I noticed words I didn't know, I wanted to practise them like in Anki. But copying them over, looking them up in a dictionary and making my own flashcards? I was too lazy. So I built a full dictionary into the app, with native speaker pronunciation and verified example sentences from PONS and wiktionary, so you can save a word the moment you don't understand it, or when you're missing one in a conversation.
That let me practise situations like sending a package at the post office beforehand. Butt to be honest, it worked in some situations, and in others I failed completely. People speak too fast, use different words, and you can't practise every situation. I really needed to train my general listening comprehension, and YouTube seemed like the best place for that. So I added a YouTube integration: you watch videos, get a comprehension question from time to time, and can add any word to your vocabulary with one click.
It's free, with no ads and no premium tier.
You can check it out here: https://noentiendo.app
I'm happy about any feedback and ideas. Maybe you're learning a language right now and think "it would be cool to practise it that way". Let me know! I've already added German, so if you want a specific language supported, just comment.
