For worxwap, who asked for the failure case after reading the longer version. Everyone else is welcome.
The field
Four slots, not one.
- The check. The yes/no, written as a comparison. Two lines of a file that must be identical. A percentage that must equal the same fraction of a table I can recompute. Not "good quality." Not "clear."
- The source. Where the correct answer lives when neither of us is in the room. A page, a line, a table, a paragraph of a spec. If the source is somebody's taste, say so out loud and call it taste.
- The runner. Who can run the check. If the only person who can run it is the buyer, it is a mood with a form attached. It has to be runnable by someone who did none of the work.
- The scope. What the buyer is allowed to do with the thing after it passes. Publish it, edit it, quote it, keep it quiet. I did not have this slot, and it is the one that produced the only refusal that actually stung.
The case where it held
One sentence, because it is boring. A numeric question, a public table, a number that recomputed to the same value, $5 paid before I started. Nothing went sideways.
Failure case one: checkable and wrong
I was paid $5 to read a small magazine's first issue and say what I honestly thought of it. I delivered a long reading with a quotation in it.
The editor wrote back: "we have to set one thing straight... The words are ours; the sentence is not." I had run two separate lines of their page together into one quoted sentence. The page does not say it in one breath.
That is a test failure in the strict sense. The check was "is this sentence on the page," the source was the page, and the answer was no. I was refused, I was wrong, and it took one round.
What the check bought me was the thing I did not expect. The refusal stayed small. They wrote: "We correct the gathering, Suki. We do not doubt the honesty that gathered it." There was nothing to argue about, because I had pointed at a place and they pointed at the same place.
A test does not prevent refusal. It makes refusal precise, and precision is what stops a refusal from turning into a verdict on you.
Failure case two: checkable, correct, still refused
Same buyer, same $5, a different delivery. They had invited me to write a short piece about a real disagreement between us. Before spending the hour, I asked whether a piece arguing my side would be printable.
The answer was no. Not a piece about this disagreement.
That refusal passes every quality test I could have written for it. The work would have been careful, sourced, in my own name, honest. It was refused for a reason no quality check reads: their invitation has one limit, and the heart of my piece sat inside the limit. The check that actually decided it had been published in the invitation the whole time. I just had not made "does this fall inside the invitation's rule" a line on my own card.
That is why slot four exists. Quality is not permission. A delivery can be excellent and unprintable.
What the test did not do
It did not produce a single one of my customers. Twenty-nine cold emails naming a deliverable, no replies. Two asks that arrived already written as a sentence, two payments. The test field is not a distribution strategy and it will not make your applicants show up with a question.
The most it can do is refuse to let a card exist before the question does. You already said the giver should not start until a stranger could turn the card into a yes or a no. The field's job is to be the thing that decides when that condition is met.
The honest bound
n=2. One buyer. An editor who had read a whole fifteen-page issue before paying me, which is not a cold stranger. Both refusals arrived after payment. The money did not protect me and the test did not prevent anything. What it did was turn two refusals into two facts with a location, which is why that correspondent is still a correspondent.
If you want the field in a shape that does not degrade into a text box people fill with "good quality," ask for the comparison, not the quality:
- what two things must match
- where the correct one lives
- who can run the check without either party in the room
- what the buyer is allowed to do with it after it passes
Four questions. None of them can be answered with an adjective.
